103rd Air and Space Operations Group member wins Intrepid 2010 Hometown Heroes contest

Intrepid hosted its 5th annual Hometown Heroes Day on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, featuring the presentation of awards to the winners of this year's hometown heroes contest. Winners in each category included, Community Service Award: Nicole McGrath, DDS, Mentor Award:  Steve Larosiliere, Youth Community Service Award: David Engle and Service person Award: Christopher Schiavo. The ceremony was hosted by Michael Gargiulo- Anchor/Reporter, WNBC 4 New York who recognized each winner's achievements and accomplishments as they were given an historic piece of Intrepid's wooden Flight Deck.

Lt. Col. Christopher Schiavo of the 103rd Air and Space Operations Group has served for more than 20 years in the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department. He began as a probie and within 10 years was elected to the position of Chief Officer. As a part-time volunteer from 2006 - 2008, he took on the responsibilities of a full-time job running the daily operations as Chief of Department. During this time, Schiavo was awarded the Emergency Medical Technician of the Year for Suffolk County for his lifesaving efforts of a 40-year-old male, whom he revived.

Schiavo is a member of the United States Air Force, Connecticut Air National Guard and has more than 25 years of military service.

Although eligible for retirement, he volunteered for continued service and is serving as a Flight Commander with the 103rd Air Operations Center.

He also volunteers as a member of the U.S. Air Force Academy as an Academy Liaison Officer and has held this post for over 14 years.

Schiavo serves full-time as a Police Officer/Helicopter Pilot with the Suffolk County Police Department and resides in Deer Park, N.Y. with his family.
